Diary of a Seasonaire
Our Seasonaire Gets Going!
There's never a dull moment in the life of a seasonnaire in the ski resort of Verbier, Switzerland! As I have already been here for one month I am now very well settled. Venturing up the snowy white mountain on my snowboard by day and working in the lively, central and hugely popular Lounge Bar, part of the Farinet Hotel, by night, I am becoming ever accustomed to the life of a 'ski bum', as we are so ungraciously termed. Over the Christmas and New Year period the resort has been heaving with families, couples and young, fun, party animals all here to enjoy Verbier at its best. Fortunately we have been blessed with plentiful supplies of snow as well as clear blue skies and temperatures reaching +1 degrees, a heat wave compared to the -27 of a few weeks ago
The slopes have been incredibly busy but the lively mountain restaurants offer a relaxing break between runs as well as a hive of lively activity. Although they deserve more description, the army boys out here to train for 6 weeks are always guaranteed to raise a mid-day drunken spectacle. For the normal holiday-makers' worries of ski hire and ski passes, Verbier has a number of very helpful and quality hire and sale shops and one main ski pass office at Medran just above the centre of town. For shops, I would advise Ski Service and No Bounds both on the road to Medran, both of which have recently given me great offers on some near new board boots and a new board.
By night, Verbier has never been such fun. The Lounge Bar, in which I work, offers a relaxing after-ski and evening atmosphere, many choosing to chill by the fire in the alluring leather sofas sipping a vin chaud or two. Next door, in the apres-ski bar, plentiful supplies of beer and jaegermeister flows easily down the throats of those dancing on the bar and the tables enjoying the live bands. At the moment we have a Swedish band who, with their array of popular cover songs, always guarantee a great evening and warm up for the night ahead. For those who can last into the early hours of the morning, the Casbah is this years vogue club. Packed with Swiss, Swedish, English, French and Dutch by this time of night everyone is incredibly friendly and keen to socialise!
The staff encourage more drinking using such tools as a plunger full of vodka or an old ski which, with the tip placed in the mouth, acts as a messy fountain for sambucca! Of course I felt it necessary to test these innovative methods of drinking before writing on them and I can assure that they have a powerful effect! As far as ski resorts go, Verbier is on top of the game, both the slopes and the night life combine to create the perfect holiday.
There are thousands of ski guides working for ski schools who regularly head for the slopes. If you would like to become a seasonaire you should contact winter sports holiday companies, you may not be paid an awful lot but you will have a great deal of fun, make new friends and improve your technique!
Our seasonaire, currently residing in Verbier, Switzerland, has been keeping us up to date with all the news from the slopes. Information on life in the fast lane in one of the worlds most glamorous winter sports locations.
