Diary of a Seasonaire
Our Seasonaire introduces us to the 'must have' cocktail!
Finally we've had our share of snowfall.
For two days now, the skies have opened covering the slopes and the village with a fresh coating of powder. Today I ventured up to the top of the mountain on the Funispace telecabin to take full advantage of the new snow, and it was everything I had hoped for. Anyone who has been skiing or boarding before knows the joy of fresh powder. One can literally glide down the mountain. The pistes were smooth and the ice of last week covered. When I ventured off-piste I was riding in snow up to my knees! Although I had a couple of tumbles, it was like merely bouncing on a soft cushion.
The clouds were still down making visibility incredibly limited but as it was still snowing I wasn't complaining. Coming down through cloud can be quite a daunting experience, other skiers can appear from nowhere and it is easy to loose the pistes if you are unsure of them. These ‘white outs' are a whole different experience in skiing or boarding. It becomes much harder to judge the width or steepness of the slopes, especially with any bumps or divets created by new snow. Although harder, it is a good opportunity to improve your technique on a board or skies. For example, bending your knees to take the impact of unseen moguls etc.
The mood in the village automatically lightens when it has been snowing and people come out to party. In the Lounge Bar, where I work, we have been selling our trademark cocktails in abundance. The ‘Pornstar Martini' is this seasons vogue. Drinking this cocktail is a three stage affair. First, drink the refreshing Passoa and Vanilla Vodka blend of the main cocktail, second eat the Passionfruit floating on the top, third, down the shot of champagne intended to compliment and combine all the flavours. It is a tasty drink as well as a fun one. When enough Martini's or pitchers of beer from the popular Pub Montfort have been drunk, everybody migrates to the Casbah in Place Centrale.
Last night, the Casbah hosted an 80s night, always popular with tourists and seasonnaires. Jack, the manager of the club, was sporting a once-fashionable, tight pink one-piece ski suit and was, as ever, encouraging the party mood selling a multitude of shots and shakers of all varieties. Although the village is still relatively quiet, the Casbah is always packed and guarantees a crazy, fun night. As my season out here in Verbier continues, I am becoming ever accustomed and settled to the ways of mountain life and am sure that, come April, venturing back to rainy England may come as a shock!
I advise anyone to come out and experience life here, even if only for a weekend or week break.
