Diary of a Seasonaire
Our Seasonaire Takes a Spa Bath
Never before have I seen as much snowfall as this week in Verbier. From last Wednesday the snowfall has been near constant and the village is once again glistening white. Though the new snow is a blessing to those wanting to use the slopes, the visibility has been pretty bad as well as temperatures dipping to well below freezing. However, one cannot complain, now the sun is out again the skiing conditions are perfect and I have been taking full advantage of them in my free time.
As it was the English half term last week, thousands of British families flocked eastwards to come and join the fun bringing with them a dazzling array of multi-coloured one piece ski suits and skis and boots that have survived from the 1970s! Its always fun to tourist-watch! However, with the slopes this busy there is far more danger of an accident. Just sitting on the ski lift one can observe numerous crashes and smashes as people turn or just stop in front of others, or some going too fast and out of control. With so many children around it is always important to remember that safety and control come first over speed.
On one particularly bad weather day, some friends and I decided to take a little road trip to Saillon to visit the natural thermal baths there, the idea of soaking in naturally warm spas was just too much to resist. When we arrived, although it was a fun day, the baths were a disappointment. Although naturally warm yes, they were so pumped with chlorine it was impossible to feel any benefits and instead it felt like just a normal though more expensive swimming pool. A few years ago I did, however, visit some baths further down the valley which were set in a much more beautiful location and offered extras such as sauna, Turkish steam room and jet streams and current projectors.
If you do fancy a trip down the valley the numerous thermal baths are a fun and relaxing day but take care in the one you choose. This week has seen the start of the Verbier Ride, an extreme skiing contest and the biggest event of the season so next week I will be reporting more on the this.
