Diary of a Seasonaire
The Scandinavians Arrive!
For the majority of this week I have actually been back in England, returning for a wedding. Luckily I managed to get five days off work which, at this busy period of the season, is not easy! Although I have used the trains before, travelling to Lausanne, I was a little apprehensive about an entire journey back to England using the trains and buses. I was, however, once again impressed by the efficiency, speed and ease of the Swiss public services.
Leaving my home in Verbier at 9 O'clock local English time, I was back in England by 1.30, an incredibly fast time considering I had a bus journey, two train journeys and a flight! Unsurprisingly, on leaving Luton airport I immediately hit traffic on the M25 and was caught in a downpour of rain - welcome home!
My returning time was just as quick though seemed longer as I was eager to get back to the snow! Geneva airport has a large train station attached to it so catching the hourly trains to Martigny couldn't be easier. In Martigny, one simply has to change platform to catch the next train to Le Chable. This small local train called the St Bernard bases its timetable around the Geneva train. From there the bus up to Verbier again sets its timetable on the other trains and provides a quick and easy service. The overall cost of the return journey to and from Geneva was 90 Swiss francs, approximately £40.
When I returned there was no time to get home and relax, I was straight into work to start a ten hour shift! The resort at the moment is again very busy, many Swedish and Norwegian holiday makers this week. It is always fun when the Scandinavians come as they are renowned for being fun, lively and big drinkers! The bar in which I work , therefore, instantly becomes a hive of activity. Last night, for example, the Lounge bar, a normally relatively busy though quiet and relaxed place, converted into a table dancing disco when the Norwegians arrived!
The atmosphere was electric and everyone had a great time, keep up the good work guys! This atmosphere is present throughout the resort and everyone has a great smile on their face, helped of course by the enormous snowfall. Whilst I was in the UK, the snowfall was constant and heavy leaving a beautiful coating and, though temporary, beautiful blue skies, perfect skiing conditions. Since then the snowfall has been relentless, slowing for an occasional half hour break. I went up the mountain today in the heavy snowfall and although visibility was slim to nothing, floating down in the fresh powder was exhilarating. Though I took a fair few tumbles, bouncing in the thick powder is a great relief compared to the solid ice. If you are planning a last minute holiday to the mountains, now is certainly the time to do it.
