This Colorado resort is a purpose built ski village. The condo buildings are wood with stone cladding and benefit from car-free squares and walkways which are the centre of the resort. There is also the East Village and here is separate accommodation and base lodge. A free shuttle bus goes between the two bases and Union Creek the centre for family and beginners' skiing. If you have visited previously do come back as it has been updated and given a good deal of TLC with new condos, plenty of shops and new places to eat.

The Americans regard this as a village but it ticks all the boxes when taking a good look at what is on offer. No hotels but plenty of condos and for a few extra dollars a little glitz and pamper with a bit of après ski in the hot tub. Good Ski Schools are a priority and here the reputation is second to none. Reliable instructors with experience for all levels of skiers – from the tiny tots to the more senior members of the clan. Just one thing to be aware of is the possibility of altitude sickness – obviously depends on where you are.

This is classed as medium size but has excellent runs with slopes which are open, glade and wooded making an attractive mix.
The slopes divide between Copper Mountain and Union Creek and from the main base there are fast quads to both. Three Terrain Parks beside the American Flyer Chair with facilities for those just learning or know a little right up to the experienced skier. The beginners have excellent nursery slopes with easy green runs waiting when the confidence builds up. Intermediates can choose between the top to bottom green runs through long blues to black runs in various areas. The terrain is good for the experts with slopes from reasonably moderate to seriously steep, but vertical is more limited.

The slopes are great for the snowboarders catering for all levels of skill and with trails of 15 miles through the White River forest it's a must for the Cross Country lovers. The visitors collect at weekends so expect a queue for the lifts but when they return to the city weekdays are back to normal. No shortage of schools with a great selection of courses and a good reputation for encouraging the children with special fun trails and their own map. Both Copper Mountain and Union Peak are 12,300 ft high which is a fair size and good for all the family. Alongside the facilities for the children there is also a park for the experts with the extra thrill of big jumps. The recently opened jib park is lively at night and is free !

Obviously this is a great consideration after a hard day skiing and building up an appetite and looking forward to a relaxing evening. No disappointments here, as soon as the lifts close the resort comes to life. Good restaurants ranging from very posh to tasty Pizzas and lip smacking Salsa. There is the Rocky Mountain Tavern with live music or for those with a bit more energy head for the traditional Irish Bar with plenty of music to set your feet tapping. A good sports club with a great pool and practice for Summer on the indoor tennis courts. What could round off the day after good skiing and excellent food? How about having a twirl on the frozen lake – remember to put your skates on first though.
